2020
To all of you who support the Vernon Cadet Camp Museum:
This past year has been full of challenges which I am pleased to say, we, as a community, have overcome.
The museum board started the year with optimism of a better year than the year before, with more visits to the museum, sponsoring more cadets who did not make it to the CTCs and enlarging our membership.
The operating team started working on school programs, evening programs for the cadet while at the CTC and other programs to spark a greater interest for all youth attending the CTC and, in the community, at large.
None of us predicted the announcement of COVID-19 and the shut down of the camp. We had to cancel our requests for hiring staff, ordering stock for the kit shop and crossed our fingers that we could maintain the current statues of the museum.
With every closing of a door a new one opens as they say.
This closing allowed us to focus on different areas of the society that we had not been able to do. We started to focus on the behind-the-scenes items that, we as a board, had not yet taken a solid look at, like governance and operational policies. Currently, the board has successfully updated some Terms of References, Policies for the museum and the board, and form committees to handle different aspects of the operations of the museum. This was done with Rick Lavin and Qwerty Services. Rick volunteered his years of experience and time to assist in the advancement of the museum and the society.
I personally would like to thank Rick and his company for all of his efforts assisting us on the successful completion of the museum's governance and strategic planning.
We held our annual auction, be it virtually, and were successful in raising the monies needed to sponsor a cadet year. This cadet took classes on archive practices and assisted in the cataloging of the archives and some artifacts. We were able to update our website and started to catalogue and list all cadet units across Canada starting with BC and working East. With the shut down of the Army Cadet League’s 'Army Cadet History Site', the staff worked on ensuring that we get as much of the missing information up and available once again.
These milestones have been reached due to the efforts of Maria Brunskill, the Operations Manager, and her tireless volunteer time in making the museum a successful.
Now that 2020 has finally come to an end and we are looking at 2021, I would like to thank the board of directors, the staff and you, our supporters, for making 2020 successful, despite of all the challenges we faced as a community.
Stay home, stay safe and see you in the New Year.
