The cadets arrived on another hot weekend in the valley, as temperatures soared to around 32c for the first few days. With Kosovo refugees living in the barracks of Gagetown's Camp Argonaut, a company of Atlantic cadets arrived in Vernon for the first time in four years. The two-weekie cadets of G coy were bivouacked under canvas on the upper hill. "Herbie Hill" was active again for the first time in a decade. Military history lectures were introduced to two companies of CL and CLI course cadets on a trial basis.
A major highlight of the summer was the 50th anniversary reunion held in the city. Some 900 former cadets and staff attended the tree day July celebration. One of the major events was the Saturday morning battalion parade held on Dieppe Square. The National Pipes & Drums from Rocky Mountain National Army Cadet Summer Training Centre were joined by the reunion band, and led the parade through the camp past the reviewing dais where the Col Commandant MGen Wheatly, Col Kinloch and LCol Daigneaut took the salute. The parade then continued off the camp, down the hill with police escort, and finished at the grandstand in Polson Park. Many friendships were rekindled.
An indoor climbing wall was now operational in F20, allowing cadets to train safely in all weather conditions. Sunday night muster parades in Coutts Common, a fixture for many years, proved their worth with company skits put on to entertain cadets and staff. Camp RSM, CWO "Sunny" Grant, retired at the end of camp and with that ended an ear in the CF. RSM Grant was the last serving member to have served in the Korean War.
Grad parade was another great send off for the last cadet camp of the millennium, with nearly two thousand guests in attendance.
Sword of Honour winner: Cadet/MWO Robert Earney, 2290 BCR RCACC
