Rock climbing and rappelling introduced into adventure training. The river program was added to CLI adventure training, with the cadets using 10-man Zodiac assault boats to cruise a 70 mile section of the Shuswap River over 3 days, from Sugar Lake to Mabel Lake. They also canoed from Mabel Lake to Mara Lake.
Rock climbing as well as search and rescue were also introduced to the CLI course, with training taking place at Eagle Rock and Silver Star respectively, just north and northeast of the city. The cadets performed high angle rescues from the top of Eagle Rock to the base, lowering a loaded stretcher down its face.
CL Companies took part in Ex Bruin at Glenemma. Two USMC jr. ROTC cadets also participated in Ex Bruin. This was the genesis of the future Cdn/American exchange program. Ex Tiro and Gymkhana featured prominently as Cl training exercises. The first aid course was improved.
Band Coy was busy with touring the Kelowna Regatta, the Penticton Peach Festival, and for the first time performing for the grad parade at the inaugural Whitehorse Army Cadet Camp in the Yukon. The pipes and drums also toured Banff.
The sports meet was once again held at Polson Park, and this year a temporary obstacle course was built. D and E Coy tied as winners of the meet. Mess hall food services were supplied by a civilian catering firm replacing the military cooks. LGen Walsh visited the camp. It was another warm summer. Under a rainy sky BGen D.J. Anderson reviewed the cadet battalion's grad parade on Aug 16, with 3000 spectators in attendance.
Western Command Trophy (top cadet) winner: Cadet Doug Thomson, 1955 Svc Bn (C Pro C) RCACC.
