In June, 2200 Militia troops mounted a civil defense exercise at the camp. The concentration was so large that some 275 troops were bivouacked under canvas at Oyama. LCol Hunden was slated to command camp, however Brigadier Bishop takes command just prior to camp start. Maj Lilley was promoted to LCol and posted to his new appointment as chief of staff at HQ Manitoba Area in Winnipeg. He will return to Vernon 7 years later. Twelve officer cadets from College Militaire Royale in St. Jean Quebec attended as assistant platoon commanders. Guard Coy paraded at Vernon Tourists Days, Penticton Peach Festival, Kelowna International Regatta, and the Lt. Gov.'s Reception in Kelowna. Wages at the cadet camp over the summer amounted to $700,000.
Mayor Frank Becker appealed to Vernon's citizens to invite a cadet to their home for a meal or weekend, as a way of continuing the friendships that had been crated over the years. Cadets were awarded theater passes for best stickmen in their respective companies. All cadets received a "going away" gift package of 4 lbs. canned fruit juice courtesy the City of Vernon and BC tree Fruits Ltd. One hundred shade trees were donated to the camp by the city.
Drum Head service was held in Polson Park at the band shell. The entire cadet battalion marched down the hill using one lane 0f Highway 97. Cadet Morley Pratt was Awarded the Governor General's medal for meritorious conduct for his prompt action in applying first aid to a seriously injured motorist involved in a highway accident. Golden Hawk Squadron performed a 600-mph flyby over the camp and city. The city was notified, but one platoon practicing drill on Dieppe Square was not. They were quite surprised. The Canadian jeep assembly record held by a regular force RCEME team of 1 minute 18 seconds at the tattoo in Vancouver was broken by a cadet team at 1 minute, 8.7 seconds. The guard practiced the fue-de-joi in Polson Park. The annual cadet show was held at Polson Park in a downpour. In spite of the weather 5000 people watched the show
